Praising God for Campus Recognition

Award with BSM team.jpg

n April, the Big Howdy team, a group mad up of the BSM and 7 other Christian student organizations at UTD, was award the UT Dallas Community Champion of Diversity Award recipient by the Office of Diversity & Community Engagement. We were nominated by the UTD International Student Office and were so honored by the nomination and award. We praise God for the favor that HE has give us at the university so that we may serve international students and invite them into relationships with Jesus. The Big Howdy team facilitates ministry through student leaders and volunteers at local churches in order to offer airport pick ups, friendship partners, rides to the grocery store, free furniture, English conversation classes, welcome parties, home groups and more for international students at UTD.

We are gearing up for a new school year of ministry to International students. New students will  begin arriving July 20 and we again will be in full swing of airport pick ups, grocery runs, the furniture give away and the Welcome Party. Please be praying for us as we host several volunteer trainings in June and early July and lay the ground work for a new year of ministry!

Living on Mission - Seattle Mission Trip 2019

Seattle Team.jpeg

Living on Mission

The following is a report from Jeremiah, one of our students who served with us on our mission trip to Seattle:

Ten days in Seattle allowed me the chance to see some of the amazing things God is doing through those who faithfully serve Him. The biggest impact for me was meeting those who are living out God’s mission for Christians: making disciples. They were changing people’s understanding of Christianity by showing God’s love to those who aren’t the easiest to love. They were serving their community by fulfilling its needs, showing the gospel to those around them.

I got to hear from a man at Bellevue College that found this as the best way to reconnect Christianity to the college. Bellevue College had gotten rid of all religious organizations and is slowly allowing them back in. This guy went to the administration and asked what the college needed so he could fill that need. They need community, so he provides that. He uses it as a way to show the good that Christ does and to tell the gospel to those he works with.

It was amazing to hear how God was using this man’s faithfulness to rebuild trust and bring the gospel to students. I also got to hear from a couple of churches about how God had directed and blessed their ministry to the city of Seattle. They were purposely small so they could connect with their local neighborhoods. They sought to plant more autonomous churches so they could continue to help in different areas rather than continue growing their one church. They were helping those in their neighborhoods, and it was changing the physical layout of the neighborhoods as negative influences were replaced with positive ones. In all of this, they attributed everything back to God working and not their own efforts.

It was encouraging to see these ministries being blessed, but there is still a clear need. There are so many people lost in Seattle who do not even understand the true joy that can come from God. There are many problems with greed and pride. There’s a lack of community that is not being filled. The worst part is a growing lack of motivation to change what is clearly wrong.

We were told that the homeless population has been growing, and people are beginning to lose interest in helping. The only thing that can solve this problem is the gospel being lived out by those who have been radically changed by it, and the only way people can be changed by the gospel is if someone goes and tells it to them.

The reason I was curious to go on this trip was to see what was in Seattle. I wanted to see what God was doing and if more laborers were needed for the harvest there. The answer I found was a clear yes. Every ministry we talked to said they needed more help. They all wanted more to be done, but that would only be possible with more disciples willing to go there to help... more people willing to sacrifice their current position to serve God just as almost all those we talked to did. Some areas would be almost impossible to reach without God working in the lives of people there, but God is at work right now in Seattle. It’s the perfect time for more to be done, for more to go.

It was incredible to see the work being done by God, to meet those living out their faith every minute. I don’t know if I am personally called to go back to Seattle, but I know this trip has caused me to re-examine how I have been living my life. I want to live out the gospel at my home as those we met do. I want to be a servant that by any possible means people may see and hear the gospel.

State of the BSM May 2019

2019 Leadteam.jpg

We just completed our second school year at UTD. It’s amazing how quickly time goes. 2019 was a year of growth and changes for our ministry, as we began free lunches on two new campuses (Collin College McKinney and Richland College) and changed the layout and night of our weekly Bible study gathering at UTD in order to be more prepared to walk with seeking students. Last fall, our staff and leadership team worked through “Breaking the Huddle” by Dough Schaupp, and through this, the Lord challenged us to change some of our weekly efforts so that we aren’t just a Christian student club but a missional, conversion community seeing the gospel transform lives.

Here are a few highlights of what took place this semester:

- UTD BSM Staff team facilitated ministry at 5 area college campuses (UT Dallas, Collin College McKinney, Collin College Frisco, Collin College Plano, and Richland College)

  • Hosted Weekly Free Lunch on 4 campuses (UTD, Collin College McKinney, Collin College Frisco, Richland College - engaging about 300 students a week in spiritual conversation)

  • Trained 20 UTD students leaders in discipleship and evangelism

  • Discipled/mentored 26 UTD students

  • Held weekly outreach booths/efforts on each of the 5 campuses

  • Sent 6 student missionaries on the May Mission trip to Seattle, 1 student missionary to New York City during Christmas break, and 11 students to serve at Beach Reach during Spring Break

  • Coordinated 286 airport pick ups in January, and hosted about 380 new international students at the welcome party where they could connect with Christian ministries like friendship partners, BSM Free Lunch, etc.

  • Co-hosted an Apologetics lecture with Frank Turek in partnership with Reasonable Faith - About 250 students came to lecture and another 50 watched online

  • Engaged about 50 high school students and parents through the BSM booth at the ReThink Apologetics Conference

  • Worked with other Christian campus organizations to host REZ Fair, a day of sharing the gospel in different ways on campus leading up to Easter

  • Commissioned 6 student leader graduates to be missionaries in their new careers

New Believer at Collin College

Last fall, Jeremiah, one of our student leaders, began going to Collin College McKinney each Monday to help with the BSM outreach booth and free lunch. Through this, Jeremiah met a student, shared the gospel with him, saw him become a Christ follower and now is discipling him. Our hope is that this experience will not be a one-time occurrence, but that we will be able to train up other UTD students to lead out in ministry at the area community colleges.

Here’s a bit of Jeremiah’s experience:

Over this semester, I have gotten to know a student at Collin through the free lunch we offer. I’ve had many conversations with him about religion and various parts of theology. It usually results in me sharing the gospel with him at least once a week. I got the sense that though he had been exposed to the gospel before, he did not quite understand it. He claimed to be a Christian, but he did not know what the Bible says or what God has done for us.

He has many great questions, and we could go very deep into them during the lunches. One week, the idea of discipleship was suggested to him and he seemed interested in it, though he did not quite understand what it was. I talked to him more later and gave him a book that we could go through together in discipleship. When we met up two weeks later, we walked through the first lesson about assurance of salvation.

As we were going through this lesson, I was asking him questions about what he thought of the scripture passages and explaining what they meant. At the end, it occurred to me that I had never asked him if he had ever prayed to receive Christ. He explained that he believed everything in the Bible to be true and had grown up in church but there was never a point when he prayed to God asking for salvation. He didn’t see why it was necessary.

I explained how there was nothing that we do in our lives to go to heaven and shared Ephesians 2:8-9, which says we do not work for our salvation. Once I showed this idea was founded in the Bible, he was very receptive of it. I went on to explain Romans 10:9-10 as well. After talking about this, I asked if he wanted to pray to receive salvation. He was a little hesitant to act, but then we talked a little more about it and on March 25th, 2019 we got another brother in Christ!

I had never walked someone through a prayer of salvation, and I had accepted Christ when I was extremely young, so I wasn’t sure what I was doing. I just walked through some of things we had talked about in the lesson and he repeated after me. It was not perfect, and he still had questions about it, but I am confident that God will continue working in his life to bring him further in his faith.

It was incredible to be used in this way for God. I praise Him that I am now a part of my friend’s testimony. Thinking about everything that went into that moment when he chose to accept Christ, I am humbled because I can see God working events so we would have that conversation at that time. I wasn’t even supposed to be there that day, but because of a storm the night before, I was. It’s awesome and humbling to know God worked to bring about his salvation and I was just a witness who God chose to use.

Photo: The UTD Beach Reach team. Our team joined with about 200 other BSM students during the 2nd week of Beach Reach in South Padre Island to serve and share the gospel with those who came to party at the beach. Our team was part of seeing 3 students choose to follow Christ. During the two weeks of Beach Reach ministry, the following took place: 19,552 rides and 11,495 pancake breakfasts given away, 11,327 people prayed with, 10,239 gospel conversations, 112 people began a relationship with Christ, and 52 recommitted their relationships with Christ. Praise God for this!

The last two months have been such a sweet time of living life with our daughter as well as a whirlwind of new parent lessons and Mark jumping back into ministry for the semester. I can't believe Hannah is now 2 months old... where has the time gone?! Also during this time, we've seen the fruit of student leaders talking to their friends about Christ as well as a group of students serving at Beach Reach during Spring Break (See the result recap in the photo caption above!).

We'll share more in our spring semester newsletter about specific ways we are seeing God move at UTD, but today I'm writing to let you know that we have our biggest campus outreach of the semester, Lunchapalooza, happening tomorrow, March 28th. UTD is having a week of special activities to get students excited about finishing out the semester after Spring Break and we are taking advantage of this promotion.

We will be partnering with Texas Baptist Men to feed 1,200 students in the Mall area of campus at from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. We will have many student leaders and local church volunteers present to engage UTD students with the gospel. We have hosted this effort every Spring for several years now, but this year, we are changing up the layout and interaction points hopefully to engage more students with the gospel.

Please join us in ministry tomorrow by praying for the following things:

- For our student leaders and volunteers to boldly share the gospel with students.
- For the hearts of UTD students to be opened, ready to hear and respond to the gospel.
- For Matt, a pastor from First Baptist Richardson, who will be giving a gospel presentation from the stage in the campus Mall area.
- For all the logistics of the day to go smoothly so that conversations can take place.
- For a great awakening and revival to take place where students begin walking with Jesus and living lives of obedience and discipleship!

Also, tomorrow night, our partner ministry, Reasonable Faith, will be hosting a lecture and discussion time by renown Christian apologist Dr. Frank Turek. Many of our student leaders have been inviting non-Christian friends to come hear Dr. Turek speak. Please also pray for this campus outreach time!

Thank you for your prayers and support! We'll let you know how Lunchapalooza goes!

Blessings to you!

Introducing Our Daughter!

On Friday, January 18 at 8:17 a.m., our daughter, Hannah Elizabeth Claire Warrington, graced us with her presence. She was 7 lbs., 20 inches at birth, and we are so thrilled to finally have her with us!

We know we gave our baby girl a long name, but it tells a story of our journey with her and hopes and desires for her.

- Hannah - means "God's Grace." We feel like she really is God's grace to us as it was a long journey for us to even get pregnant.
- Elizabeth - means "Consecrated to God; God is my Satisfaction." Our hope and prayer is that her ultimate satisfaction will be in our Heavenly Father.
- Claire - means "Bright." Throughout our pregnancy, several friends, along with us, have specifically prayed that Hannah will be a bright light in our ministry and that she will point people to Christ.

Last week was quite the whirlwind, as on Monday, Kaitlin had a sudden spike in blood pressure after a very healthy pregnancy and was put on bed rest. At our doctor's appointment on Thursday, Hannah's due date, things were not better, and our doctor pushed for an induction. We were not thrilled about this as it was going to throw out our hopes of having a natural birth. But after talking, we felt like induction really was in the best interest for Hannah. We ran home, grabbed our bags, told family about the changes and headed to the hospital by late afternoon.

We thought we were going to have a very hard road ahead of us that night, but God was very gracious. Once at the hospital, Kaitlin's blood pressure lowered a bit and the doctor was willing to give her the less aggressive induction meds. By 3 a.m., contractions kicked in naturally and we were able to deliver with the original, natural birth plan 5 hours later. We are so thrilled by this and attribute this to so many friends and family praying for us throughout the night.

The next couple of days at the hospital were a blur, and we made it home Sunday evening. Now we've been learning to settle into life as a family of three.

Thank you for your prayers and support through our pregnancy and for celebrating this time with us! We can't wait to introduce Hannah to all of you!

Blessings to you!

Photo: (Top) In early December, we hosted a Christmas outreach at our home. Here the group is playing Pass the Parcel, a British Christmas game. (Bottom) Kaitlin's parents and sister came to spend Christmas with us and several international students joined us for Christmas Eve Candle Light Service and dinner.

We hope you have enjoyed the holidays and had some wonderful days of celebration and rest with friends and family. We had a great visit from Kaitlin's parents and sister and got to include a few international students in our Christmas Eve celebration.

Before students completed finals, we spent one evening going to First Baptist Richardson's Carols by Candlelight Christmas pageant and then came to our house for wassail and sweet Christmas treats. We had several students come who had never been in a church before and who had never seen the story of Jesus presented. We had a great time chatting with these students about what they had seen and showing them why Christmas is such a significant time for us.

After all these celebrations, Mark and I have had a few quiet days at home and it has been so nice. We've been able to finish up most of the preparations for baby girl and now are awaiting her arrival. It looks like she will be coming closer to her due date, Jan. 17.

As our faithful support team, we wanted to keep you updated on our maternity leave plans. Once baby girl is born, Mark will be taking a couple of weeks off of work so that we can adjust to our new life and then I'm planning to take 8 weeks of maternity leave. If all goes well, I'll head back to work mid semester, but if we need a little more time to adjust, I might extend maternity leave to 12 weeks. We'll keep you updated. We would greatly appreciate your prayers during this time as we begin to figure out life as a family of 3!

Thank you for being our faithful ministry partners! We could not serve at UTD and be a gospel presence there without your generosity, prayers and partnership.

Blessings to you!

- Mark and Kaitlin

Prayer Requests

- Please pray for a healthy labor and delivery of our baby girl. Also pray for us a we learn to do life and ministry as a family of 3!

- We are hosting a BSM leadership training day on Jan. 11. We will continue to cast vision for the ministry changes we are making this semester and prepare the students to lead out in small groups, Free Lunch outreach and more. Please pray that the students will gain a God-sized vision for seeing their peers come to know Christ and that they will be excited to be part of it!

- We have been in the midst of airport pick ups for new international students. We are so thankful for all the volunteers helping us. Along with a few other ministries at UTD, we'll host the Big Howdy on Friday night, Jan. 11 for all the new international students. We're expecting about 500 students and many volunteers. This is a significant night for new international students to get connected to people who love Jesus. Please pray that authentic relationships are formed and that the logistics go smoothly for the night (there are many pieces to hosting a big welcome effort like this!).

- The new semester begins Jan. 14! Please pray for a movement of God to happen at UTD this semester! We trust that there are students ready to hear and respond to the gospel and we are excited to be part of this!

We pray for you, our ministry partners, too, so feel free to email us your specific prayer requests!

November was filled with some very sweet moments for us. For many years, we have dreamed of having a home big enough to host students and now we get to do that! The weekend before Thanksgiving, our staff and student leaders cooked up a lovely Thanksgiving dinner and invited the students we have been reaching out to this semester. We had 40 of us at the dinner, with 8 new students who hadn't come to any BSM gatherings to that point!

Also, we revealed the Spring break, May and Summer mission projects to students through an annual night of worship and prayer for Missions. It's always fun to get to challenge students to think big/dream big about joining God on mission not only on a daily basis on campus but also during the breaks from their classes.

To top it all off, some sweet Dallas friends threw us a baby shower this month, helping us prepare for Baby Warrington. Family came from West Texas to celebrate with us and we got to invite many of the international student ladies to the party. It was a sweet time where many of the international students got to meet our friends who love Jesus and see them pray for us and Baby Girl! I pray this is a step in them drawing near to Jesus.

Watch your mailbox in the next couple of weeks as we'll have our larger semester newsletter coming your way! We just want you to get a bigger picture of the ministry you have made possible at UTD and Collin College this semester!

Blessings to you!

Prayer Requests

- We hosted our student outreach on Saturday. We took international students to First Baptist Richardson's Christmas pageant and then went back to our house for Christmas cookies, games and a discussion about Christmas. Please pray that the international students will contemplate what they experienced and that their eyes will be opened to the truth of Christ.

- Students are in the midst of exams from now until Dec. 18. Please pray that they will rely on the Lord during this stressful time. And pray for the metal health of students too.

- God has laid on our hearts to make some big shifts in programing next Spring to be more evangelism focused. We will be meeting as a staff team next week and in early January to put the changes in place. Please pray for wisdom and intentionality as we do this. (More info to come on these exciting changes!).

We pray for you, our ministry partners, too, so feel free to email us your specific prayer requests!

Photo: (Top) Jeremiah (a BSM student leader and the guy who lives with us!) engages a student in spiritual conversation during our weekly chai outreach booth in the business school; (Left Bottom) Brittany (a BSM student leader) teaches others about sharing the gospel via the Three Circles Method during our Engage 24 Evangelism emphasis night; (Right bottom) After our Engage 24 Evangelism training, we took a group of students to host a hot chocolate and game outreach in one of the freshmen dorms so they could immediately put into practice the gospel sharing they had learned.

October was our annual evangelism emphasis month. Though we strive to have sharing the gospel be a daily effort and the constant culture in the BSM, it helps to have some specific days to train students and to jump start them into a life of gospel sharing. To do that, we participated in Engage 24, a national collegiate ministry effort to help students engage in evangelism learning and practice for at least 24 hours. At one of our weekly worship gatherings, some of our student leaders shared stories about engaging others in the gospel and then held trainings in relational evangelism, the Three Circles gospel sharing method and Soularium Card outreach efforts. It was neat to see once gospel-shy students begin engaging in the process of sharing their faith!

Also in October, midterm exams hit and we saw and uptick in students wrestling with anxiety, depression and other mental health issues. Though this is now the norm on college campuses across the U.S., it is especially true at UTD, as the students are highly driven and put serious pressure on themselves to succeed academically. We see this even in our BSM student leadership team as well. But praise God for amazing Christian counselors who are working beside us to care for these students. We now have about a third of our leadership team attending Christian counseling in addition to participating in personal discipleship meetings with staff. We are so proud of these students for taking the initiative and making the effort to grow in all areas of their lives!

The mental health struggles will continue to rise on campus as we get closer and closer to final exams. Would you pray with us about the following?

- Pray that the Lord would intersect the path of students struggling with anxiety, depression or suicidal thoughts with a believer on campus who could love them, share gospel truth with them and walk with them to take healthy steps towards help and healing.
- Pray for our leadership students who are walking through counseling. Pray that through this, they will see the Lord's truth about them and will find healing in Him.
- Pray for wisdom for us BSM staff as we walk with students having mental health struggles.

Thank you for ministering with us through prayer and your support! It means the world to us to know we are not laboring for the gospel at UTD alone.

We love y'all and are praying for you too!

Changing the Culture

Photo: Mark, Grace (one of our BSM associate directors) and Alyssa (a BSM student leader), are playing Sardines (reverse hide and seek) with a group of students during one of our BSM outreach efforts on campus during September.

As we began the semester, we felt compelled to help our students gain more of a heart for intentionally sharing their faith and spending more time with students who aren't Christians. We have been teaching the concepts from Breaking the Huddle, a great book about moving from a huddled Christian group to a Christian community where there are people coming to faith in Jesus and reproducing disciples (a conversion community).

One step was to hold many outreaches where the students could invite non-Christian friends, build trust with them and begin sharing about Jesus. Each week in September, we held a different outreach gathering in addition to our weekly scheduled gatherings. This included a cookout, Sardines, a board game night, and a gym night.

In addition to this, our Grow Teams (student small groups) each hosted an outreach where the students committed to invite and bring a non-Christian friend. It was fun to see the creativity of the students as they dreamed up ways to care for their non-christian friends and to invite them into community. The girls' group hosted a potluck dinner, the guy's held a taco fiesta, one co-ed group handed out milk and cookies at a freshmen resident hall and the other co-ed group went out to dinner to a local pizza place.

From these efforts, students are building trusting relationships and it's been fun to see their excitement grow for sharing the gospel and working to build trust with their peers!

Prayer Requests

  • Today is Engage 24, a national collegiate day focused on sharing the gospel on college campuses across America. We are using our weekly worship gathering to teach on God's heart for evangelism and ways to share our faith, and then we are hosting a s'mores and hot chocolate outreach in a freshmen resident hall at 8:30 p.m. Please pray for fruitful relationships and gospel sharing tonight!

  • One of our Spanish-speaking student leaders began a Spanish Grow Team (small group Bible study and outreach) last week. God already sent one non-Christian student. Please pray that this is a fruitful outreach and time in the Word.

  • Mark is teaching a couple of breakout sessions on Generation Z (current college students) next week at Conclave Youth Ministry. Please pray for him as he completes preparations for this and teaches others how to minister to and disciple college students.

  • Our baby girl keeps growing (yay!). Please pray that we continue to have a healthy pregnancy and have wisdom in making all the preparations for her arrival in January!

Please let us know how we can be praying for you! You are a blessing to us!

Each year, we look forward to August as that means the students are back on campus and the semester kicks off again!!! God gave us incredible opportunities to train up students leaders and to reach out to new and current students during this last month. Here's the ministry that you helped enable in August!

  • 1,100+ Airport pick ups for new international students completed!

  • 18 BSM leadership students trained in gospel appointments and equipped to do campus ministry this semester during our 3-day leadership training retreat.

  • 1,432 new international students and about 100 volunteers came to the Big Howdy International Student Welcome party where they were introduced to Christian organizations on campus, the Friendship Partner Program, English Conversation Club, Furniture Giveaway and more. The BSM hosted the effort in conjunction with 5 other international ministries and the UTD International Office.

  • 1,200 students fed by Texas Baptists Men at our annual Fajita Feed Outreach Lunch in the middle of campus the second week of classes.

  • At least 20 gospel appointments set up from Fajita Feed where student leaders will connect and share the gospel with students who requested more info on the BSM. We are still working through the contact cards and expect the number of gospel appointments to rise!

  • 5 nightly BSM Welcome Week events hosted in conjunction with local churches, giving them access to campus to meet new students and invite them to be part of their groups.

  • 2 pots of chai tea made each week of class for our new weekly International student Chai tea outreach in the business school.

God is doing exciting things at UTD! Please keep praying with us for a gospel movement to happen on our campus!

Prayer Requests

  • Through gospel appointments, we have had some great opportunities to share the gospel. Please pray for the BSM staff and student leaders as we continue to walk with these students in community and in living out the gospel in front of them.

  • We have kicked off our 6 Grow Teams (small group/outreach teams) led by staff and student co-leaders. Please pray that these groups will not only produce authentic Bible discussions but will lend to active obedience and heart changes in the students.

  • We will host our Fall Retreat Sept. 28-30 in conjunction with the Collin College and Richland College BSMs. Please pray for wisdom for our staff team as we finish planning the retreat and that the retreat will be a great time of community and students encountering the Lord.

Please let us know how we can be praying for you!

Blessings,

Mark and Kaitlin

Special Announcement!

Special announcment Aug 2018.jpg

The last few weeks have had some extra excitement as we learned we are expecting our first little one. We have prayed for this for a couple of years and now the Lord has blessed us with a little one on the way. A few days ago, we went to our 18-week sonogram, finding out that we are having a baby girl and learning she is healthy and growing well. We are so thrilled! She should be arriving on January 17, 2019.

As our support team and ministry partners, we wanted to make sure we kept you in the loop as this new season unfolds. We have always seen ministry as our family calling, so I (Kaitlin) plan to continue on working in the ministry after maternity leave. We'll give you more specific details about this closer to the baby's arrival, but please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. We are excited to see how the Lord will use this new season with a little one to open doors with students. International students usually love being around kiddos, as many of them have lived in multi-generational settings, and often a little kid helps build relationships with them!

We'd love your prayers for a continued healthy pregnancy and for a safe delivery!
